Q. Should the refugium /mud filter be built into the middle of the filter?

A. No. It takes up too much space and takes away from the water handling capacity of the filter. In addition, there is no way to turn the refugium off in order to medicate the main tank. Make it independent so you can add it to any filter system or build it on the end of the filter.

This is the question we asked and answered with the all new AR-Pro refugiums. The units are designed to be added specifically to any of the Aquarium Life Support Systems filters. However, they can be added to any filter system, bringing all the benefits mud filters/ refugiums provide.

Medicating the tank or wanting to add Mud? Not a problem. Simply turn your refugium off and place the pump you feed it with in it for circulation. If you are feeding it off the main pump, turn it off and add a powerhead or air pump. This is why we designed it separate from the main system.

The uniquely designed drain has a safety overflow in it in case macro algae clogs the main drain screen. The return is a 1/2 inch tank adapter with a Locline outlet. Simply place the unit near a refugium or filter, hook up a small pump (not included), or tee off of the main pump, and drain the unit back into the filter or sump. The drain water can be sent directly into the filter, into a Model G Reactor (optional), sock filter or onto the secondary sponge.

The recommended but optional items that you will need for hookup can be purchased by us. They are as follows:

1) Substrate Options:
CaribSea Mineral Mud (CS8449) (Note: Minimum 1 for model A, 1-2 for models B and C, and 2-4 for Model D. More can be used for a deeper substrate.) More can be added later as needed.

2) Pump Options:

Oase OptiMax 285 Pump (OA233), Sicce 0.5, or Quiet One 1200 (RP1001)

3) Light Options:

aquaLife Ultra Nano RGB LED AL257 or AL258

Other Important Instructions

Refugiums/ mud filters are excellent ways to increase the filtration of any system. The Mud brings a range of benefits to the system that benefit fish, corals, and water quality. In addition, Macro algae grown in the refugium/ mud filter can reduce phosphate and nitrate. Remember to leave lighting on 24 – 7 for macro algae to prevent sporing. Also, weed out algae and feed it to fish or discard it. This prevents the filters from being overgrown and helps remove nutrients from the system. If macro algae is not growing, try Iron or a macro algae supplement.
