Why Use a CO2 Drop Checker
Maintaining proper CO2 levels is critical in planted aquariums. Too little CO2 limits plant growth while too much can stress or harm fish.
The UP Aqua Drop Checker provides a constant visual reference using a color changing indicator solution helping you dial in CO2 injection safely and effectively.
How It Works
A drop checker uses an indicator solution with a known KH and a pH sensitive dye. As CO2 diffuses into the solution it changes pH which results in a visible color change.
Blue indicates low CO2
Green indicates ideal CO2 around 30 ppm
Yellow indicates excess CO2 which may be harmful to fish
Instructions for Use
Prepare indicator solution
Use a pre mixed CO2 indicator solution or prepare a 4 dKH reference solution with indicator dye
Fill the drop checker
Add indicator solution to the bulb of the drop checker about two thirds full
Install in aquarium
Invert the drop checker and attach it inside the aquarium using the included suction cup
Place it opposite the CO2 diffuser for accurate readings
Allow time to stabilize
Wait one to two hours for the solution to adjust to tank CO2 levels
Monitor color
Observe the color daily and adjust CO2 injection as needed
Indicator Solution Options
Pre mixed drop checker solutions recommended for accuracy
DIY 4 dKH solution with indicator dye
Do not use aquarium water as KH levels vary and give inaccurate readings
General Drop Checker Best Practices
Place away from direct CO2 injection
Check color at the same time daily
Replace indicator solution every two to four weeks
Clean glass regularly for clear visibility
Ensure proper water circulation for accurate readings
