Aquarists use Almond Leaves to mimic the natural habitat of Bettas, but many other freshwater species benefit from them as well. Discus, gouramis, killiefish, tetras, arrowanas, angelfish, South American dwarf cichlids, corys, plecos, and rasboras are a few freshwater species that do well with almond leaves added to their environments.
While scientific efforts are underway to measure the specific benefits of Almond Leaves, aquarists for years have used them believing they improve health, stimulate the natural environment of fish native to soft, acidic waters by naturally reducing pH, increase fertility, and reduce the incidence of bacterial infections. The release of tannins produces the blackwater environment found in Betta habitats.
Almond Leaves naturally release tannins into the water which will color aquarium water producing the backwater environment found in Betta habitats.
Directions: Use 2 leaves per 20 gallons of water. Rinse leaves well with tap water before adding to the aquarium. Leaves can be used whole or broken into smaller pieces. Remove after 2 weeks and replace with new leaves. Observe the results, and add more or fewer leaves as needed. Store Almond Leaves in a sealed package in a dry area.
